The Staatliches Bauhaus was founded in 1919 under the direction of architect Walter Gropius. The term “Bauhaus” originally referred to a school which combined crafts and the fine arts and was influenced by modern design, the English Arts and Crafts Movement and constructivism. Over time and with its increasing prominence, the Bauhaus architectural style grew to include its iconic features: a functional, linear design and a corresponding understanding of design without any kind of ornamentation.

1. No barriers between artist and craftsman
In 1919, Walter Gropius proclaimed that the goal of the Bauhaus was to do away with the class distinctions between craftsman and artist: “Architects, sculptors, painters – we must all turn to craftsmanship!”
This equal treatment of all disciplines involved can also be seen in the formation of a next125 kitchen. Each of the departments contributes their expertise in close exchange and communication with one another. It’s precisely this tightly intertwined cooperation that gives rise to the substantial and timeless kitchen designs paired with their usual quality.
2. Form and function in harmony
This design principle puts the entire essence of an object and its purpose in a room in the limelight. Simple yet elegant geometric shapes are designed according to this idea. However, the lack of ornamentation and decor must not come across as unimaginative or boring; instead, the clear shapes and conscious use of colour should generate excitement.
next125 implements this principle, where form is dictated by function. This is demonstrated by the ergonomic concept and the purposeful organisation of the interior of drawers and pull-outs. 3. Use of “real” materials
In the teachings of the Bauhaus movement, the materials used should reflect the true nature of objects or buildings – even raw or untreated materials shouldn’t be hidden away. The materials used should speak for themselves and be accentuated in a conscientious way.

4. Simplicity and efficacy
A highly prominent shape in design is the cube. One will often see this architectural shape in connection with the material of glass. From a Bauhaus perspective, it does away with the superfluous. Without purpose, there is no need to additionally decorate things or make them “more beautiful”. Instead, clearly defined lines and geometric shapes are preferred.
The foundation of next125 is also based on the essential and substantial aspects of a piece of furniture or object. A curious and innovative spirit was essential for working in the Bauhaus. The artists embraced the opportunities of new and modern technology and ways of working and developed prototypes for mass production in the workshops.
